I think everyone(myself included) thought Rock’em Sock’em Robots when they saw the previews of Real Steel. You were right but not in the childish, silly way the childhood delight of violence loving youths around the globe grew up with, simply there are robots and they kick the crap out of one another.
This movie is the story of a down on his luck boxer whose taken his chance on robots fights and found his luck and wallet still wanton. Now enter the news a ex-girl friend has died and you are now the parent of the child you left and forgot about 11 years ago. Needless to say this brings up alot of emotional acting for both Hugh Jackman, and his 11 year old son played by Dakota Goyo. This movie’s plot idea is rather run of the mill but what makes this movie stand out is the writing and the acting.
As we all know children are a combination of there parents personality and looks wise, this translates into some very well known mannerisms from both parents. Goyo pulls off the well written depictions of these very things so well one would say him and jackman were father and son. This movie is heart warmer and its message is very heart felt a great date movie in my eyes, there is enough action to keep the fellas adrenaline pumping and enough emotion between father and son plus the love interest of Jackman to keep the ladies happy.
All in all this movie is far better than anyone probably would have ever predicted or thought possible from robots kicking the shit out of one another but this is also why most studios now a days are afraid to make something new that isn’t a sequel or remake because of inherent skepticism and dislike of new and more unique blending of ideas. This is a must see for all ages, genders, and walks of life.
