What a day…in the life of a mechanically un-inclined nerd bear….

Sigh, I think I have told my friends this numerous times but cars are easy to buy but murder to keep up. I mean seriously I drove to this years Balticon in my truck. It handled the drive lovingly. Theennnn, when we get back there was a change in the air. It all start with…a pop. yes as I was backing out of the drive to head to work there was a pop and my right tired blew out, as I had no time for changing a tire less than 20 minutes before work It had to stay until the am. Not such a bad thing right? right well the geniuses at car companies now use these lovely devices called locking lug-nuts and to remove a tire this beast of man made origin must be conquered. I maybe a rather physically menacing figure when looked at from a general stand point I mean. 6’3 280lbs big and bald well needless to say I was stumped by staggered by the two hit combo of releasing the spare tire from its cage and removing the flat. by the way Chevrolet eat a dick for your asinine spare tire mounting and torture device turned vehicle jack. as I have spotted off such craziness I will illuminate 30 minutes to struggle and wrench these lug-nuts off after a 45 minute cranking of this damned jack to raise the vehicle so it and the bad tire do not fal land crush my poor exhausted self after a shift at work. Now the really killer the spare tire house is a De Vincian device were you have to crank this turny thing to lower the device but at the same time to hve it jacked up and pressing in what your lowering to compress this spring and go back and forth between cranking to lower and lowering the jack to keep continual pressure until the tire literally falls off this industrial strength death cord. now after all is said and done( a nap 3 beers a google search for youtube videos and half a day later) I have released the imprisoned spare tire and with more grunting turning and wrench attached and cast the blown ring of rubber into the pit(bed of my pickup) and lowered the truck back upon the ground to rest were it shall sit for a month because my breaks and rotors are and make a horrible banshee squeel and grinding sound straight form the never ending story rock family. Now after forking over nearly 4 hundred bucks for a replacement tire for the front left(driver side) due to extensive tire wall damage and breaks and rotors for the front my poor baby is almost ready to roll once more just some minor things now like a tune up, and normal time/mileage based maintenance and I can stop driving the mini-can around.

so moral of the story, become a wizard and use brooms, flu powder, and port keys to get around for there cheaper and far less of a pain in my furry nerd bear butt.

Now if you will excuse me I am off to weep and drink some rye as remember this tale has drained me, but dont forget(shameless self promo) to check out My podcast along side Jen, called Talk Nerdy 2 Me rate us and review us on iTunes if you like and or if your feeling froggy stop by the Facebook page and talk with us there we are always posting things and speaking of whatever odd nerdy thing we are into at the moment and would love for you to join us as well and give your likes and share as tribute…I mean wait what do I mean. yeah so just come say hi, and this is Big Bear out until next time.

Here I come…

Hiya Everybody! I am back of sorts I have had so much going on its been rather crazy. So I apologize about not being here like a month and a half. Next I will give you a run down on what I have been occupying my time with. First up I submitted a “first draft”of an reading for a short story. This one one of the hardest things I have ever had to do and to think talking for me couldn’t be hard. I even took a day off from work to finish it and try to get it as best as I could with out correction or suggestion for making it better from the content creator them self. I don’t know if I will be what they are looking for hell most likely I am not. This is fine, however because I was offered the chance to do something spectacular and I feel good about this first attempt and I can only get better.

My next time consuming endeavor has been the podcast and it’s bi-weekly content with Jen. I was a bit lax on it because we both have been crazily busy with our day jobs. This will change soon as I will be quitting mine and going to college full time to get a degree in production technology. Which excites me because I can actually learn more about the behind the scenes technical aspects of podcast production, radio, television, hell maybe even stage and so forth. Jen has just started doing night shift so she will be on my old schedule lol meaning recording for her will be a bit easier as she isn’t going to be bouncing back and forth trying to juggle her schedule with mine as  her schedule is now a fixed one like I had. Now also on the side of the podcast I have created a Facebook page  this was in hopes to get more listen and via the listeners more input about the shows content, about what we can do better and about what we have done wrong or can stay the same. Finally I have linked my Google+ with YouTube to create the Talk Nerdy 2 Me channel were we will try to do periodic live streams for reviews and episodes of the podcast(I will also post the audio of those in the RSS feed so you wont miss out though It may take me a bit of finagling as I am still very new to this)

Well there you have it I have been trying to make moved and expand my experiences with this whole wide world of social media and the digital age so please bare with me and hang on because just as I am learning I want you all to come along with me so we can experience this together. As always any suggestions and criticisms are welcome. Talk you again real soon

10 Podcasts You Should Hear…TWICE!!

I am an avid podcast listener, and as a young fledgling podcaster myself I eager take in all the good and bad that I hear. So this list will be the most helpful and best podcasts in the bunch. I will not rank them nor will I say there aren’t better out there but I decided to choose 10 and I am sticking to it. So if I listen to you, and your not here I am sorry just the constraints I put upon myself nothing against you and don’t worry there maybe a second list(of course there will be lol I just can’t help myself). So here it is 10 podcasts you should hear, TWICE!!

The first podcast I ever downloaded and listened to and still do to this day religiously:

I Should Be Writing by Mur Lafferty

This is a podcast for wanna be fiction writers by a up and coming if not already there fiction writer. Mur Lafferty has opened herself up to her fans and friends alike letting us in on her writing ups, down, rises and falls. She also has openly and candidly talked about her own issues ranging from social anxieties to fighting depression and all the while she is dishing out advice and raising a young one and loving a husband. She is one of the strongest and smartest people I have ever had the pleasure to meet though sadly I totally fanboy’d all over the moment and will have to make up for that hopefully with this years Balticon(fingers crossed)

The Round Table Podcast

This author interview and literary workshop podcast, hosted by the literary alchemists themselves Dave Robison and Brion Humphrey is marvelous to hear. These guys interview a fellow author one episode then the next they being them back and maybe even a fourth host of mystery and then workshop an authors story right on air. I have learned so much about so many people and about spit balling ideas and building a story this is a great podcast to listen to and learn from.

The Shared Desk

The newest podcast outing from godfather of podcasting himself Tee Morris and his lovely wife Pip Ballentine Morris. What can I say about this podcast on writing, social media, marketing, and even bits of there personal life along with their solo and tandem careers. Other than its awesome and when you hear it great things will be shared with you, along with copious drop in awesome from the TeeMonster himself 😛

The Shrinking Man Project

This is a powerful podcast were one man talks very candidly and openly about his struggles and successes with loosing weight and being healthier. That man is Doc Coleman whom I have met and wish I could dress half as dapperly as this man. As someone who has recently had to start being healthier and watching my weight and what I eat and so forth the listen to this podcast and hear about what he goes through and the advice he has and motivations he yields is utterly amazing and a fantastic listen for anyone to learn from.

We Hate Hate Movies

We Hate Movies

A movie review podcast hosted by Andrew Jupin, Chris Cabin, Steve Sajdak, and Eric Szyszka is down right hilarious. They watch movies 10 years old or older and in a comedic way talk about them. Simple right? Right simple and its effective comedy gold.

Yeah It’s That Bad

A shrouded in as much mystery as it is in a massive fart cloud of running gags, in jokes, and bouts of uncontrollable laughter. These three unknown hosts(and they like it that way) are Kevin, Joel, and Martin(and yes Kevin was listed first on purpose) review movies suggested by fans or on a whim they decided to watch and its a wonderful journey to embark with these three… gentleman(?)

Anime World Order

Probably one of these most untimely podcast on the internet but despite it all these three characters Clarissa, Jarold, and Daryl has one of these most knowledgable and informative anime podcast you every wanna listen to and listen you will.

Film Sack

Join Scott Johnson and his FilmSack pals, Brian Ibbot, Brian Dunaway, and Randy Jordan with powerful and spectacularly voiced Scott Flecher as narrator? as they watch films from Netflix streaming and review them just like you and your pals would then dish out some film sack approved awards to finish it up. this podcast is a fun time for all

Blame It On Outer Space

A podcast debunking conspiracy theories in a comedic way. This podcast is the brain bomb of Eric Szyszka, sadly it is only once a month but it is a funny and great way to spend some time out of your day once a month. His fellow pals form We Hate Movies has shown up a couple time but each episode he has some new and funny folk coming in or returning powered by the hot jams of DJ Krymulak this is a podcast like no other.

Fast Karate For The Gentle

This podcast is an anime podcast about food hosted by Dave and Joel to hot blooded, giant robot loving, Food(anime?) loving gents from above the mason dixon who have a good time and bring you along with them, oh and they talk about video games as well 😀

There you have it folks 10 podcasts to bless your ears with. So step back in to the bears den sometime so and I will have somethingelse to spout off to you, I promise.

April Fools? Bleh!

This Bear has never been a big fan of the pulling pranks so this post will be all truth baby booya! I wanted to talk about a couple things one of which is the fact Netflix has added the 90’s most awesome cartoons to its streaming service those being of their cartoon cartoon block. That’s right folks Powerpuff Girls, “Ed,Edd,Eddy”, Samurai Jack, and the others are all there for you enjoyment. I for one am a amazingly happy bear right.

With that annoucment out of the way I can take some time to talk about another awesomeness I have found lately( which equals today) Rooster Teeth’s coming show call “RWBY”. As an anime fan my eyes picked up on the anime influences right away but with the awesome animation and bad ass character designs so perfectly suited by the cell shading I couldn’t help but check out the trailers for Red, White, Black. Yellow will be out before the premere in July I am sure so keep your eyes posted for this as well.

Last just givingyou guys a heads up Jen is out of town right now and I pick her up from the airport come tomorrow morning and we will have you a super awesome episode of Talk Nerdy 2 Me so you guys catch up with us then we will have you a bunch of episodes we have been planning shot out to you guys at once its just like kinda caught up with us all at once with me getting ready for college in august, and her having to go see her ailing grandfather plus out work schedules we just hadnt had a moment to put our lofty podcast ideas on wax so to speak.

Well I am keeping this short and bringing it to a close but I have some 10 things coming up, and even a thing men should know coming down the pipe so be ready because winter is over and the bear is coming out of a hybernative fuge state and he’s ready to rock and maul with the best of them.

so until next time this is Big Bear signing out.

ps, Am I the only one who has noticed that Yorkie’s looks like members of the beetles with those bangs and they pull back their ears?

Time Well Spent

You know some times you try so hard, pouring  your sweat and bleed into something that you dont realize just how burnt out or mentally exhausted you are. Until that is you look at what you have been doing other than working on your project. I have recently done this I have spent so much time between my novel, the podcast, and other things namely my blood sugar. That I didn’t realized I have stopped reading almost completely I have stalked about the net to other blogs, I haven’t touch my manga collection, or any of the awesome books I have awaiting my eyeballs and imagination.

You’ve been working you say, things fall to the way side you say, and that is all true but just like all things your imagination needs fuel, your discipline needs fuel. This is something most of use forget when swept up in a story or in trying to make something how we want it. So I have decided to hammer out some points unto myself 1) read more, 2) excercise more(I was doing this twice aweek or more before and have fallen off) 3) work with in my means. This last one is probably most important because it will make room for the others. Now because I work nights 10pm – 7am I will have to push my will and drive to stay awake a few more hours after work so things can get done. I will have to keep this up for 30 days because science, that SCIENCE!!!! says to form a habit you have to do something for at least 30 days. Once I have spit balled the scheduling around a bit I will post my schedule and but podcasting and blogging will fall on thursdays and fridays I knwo this for curtain so dont worry my faithful few the bear will be bck to his weekly bits. To finish this post up I will let you know I have upgraded abit and gotten a Tumblr and a Pinterest to go along with Facebook, Twitter, Google+. The tumblr is a bit saucy I wil lstil ltalk about my nerdy bits and loves but I will also talk about adult matter and things themed with in that realm. So you could say I am letting my hear down a bit on the Tumblr, not the Pinterest is probably more akin to this and the podcast though I only have one board right now and its just for diabetic recipes the next board will be some sort of nerdy one but I haven’t decided about what yet. Well If you have any idea or either email me jaygbanks@gmail.com or message me on Twitter @JG_Banks, @Nerdy2mepodcast. The pinterest is http://pinterest.com/jgbanks/, ans lastly the Tumblr http://jgbanks.tumblr.com

Big Bear on…Big Bear

Hey guys i am not dead yet…honest its just a flesh wound. Seriously though after a feverish month of podcasting, tied with my first convention of the season I begin outlining a new work as frustration and agitation drive me to out the pen to bed on my story though it was also advised by a author I know whom is much wiser than I and basically said I was forcing it to much.

Also am finishing up Cats beta which has taken me way to long but I want it to be as thorough as possibly because i know he wants to shops it around and or self pub.

In May is my second con of the season Balticon and I will be doing 3 panels there:

•Anime 101 – a intro to Japanese animation for parents to know what there kids are watching and buying and also a way to give perspective fans something to sink there teeth into without jumping into the deep end.

•Anime After Dark – a look at hentai, eroticism, sexual themes, love and romance in anime

•Anime Vs. Traditional(western world animation) – a look at the simulaties, differences and blending of topics, material, subject matter, animation styles and those who create both styles ie Walt Disney, Warner Brothers, Hanna Barbara, John Lasiter(Pixar) and folks like John Bluthe( all dogs go to heaven, Fifal An American tail and others) for anime and Japanese animation you have Osamu Tezuka(Astro Boy, Phoenix), Akira Toriyama( Dragon Ball Z) Hayao Miyazaki( Spirited Away, Ponyo, Howl’s Moving Castle) and Isao Takahata(My Neighbors the Yamatas, Grave of the fireflies)

These will be my first panels EVER so I am preparing like a mad man though I hope I don’t come off as a show off or know it all cause I don’t know of the other panelists are preparing or taking it as serious as I am because if you work panels and the video room you can get free admission to the con. I want the experience because it will help me with public speaking(ie readings as an author), and to research for this will help with researching for writing and my podcast. Which is why I am gonna buy my ticket for the con regardless and if they reimburse me that’s cool if not i get to talk about something i love.

My last con Anime Festival Orlando will be in early part of August just before I return to college as a full time student in pursuit of degrees in production technology(radio, television, film, stage) and Journalism(print and broadcast)

On top of all of this I will keep writing, I will keep blogging, I will keep podcasting and I will still hover about on the interwebs and the OWG as the big lovey bear that I am

Bears, Betas, and Beers!!

Well You read right this bear Is on the move through a beta read for a friend*cough* here’s looking at you Cat!!*cough*. I decided to do this post because well, I think beta reading is fun and being apart of the growth and creation of some ones world is just amazing. Also it will teach you think about critique another’s work and also guide you along the path of writing so yours gets better as well so it win, win all around. so here are a few things I have picked up along the way to help those seeking betas and those willing to or are betas themselves. also most of this is things form far bigger and better folks but passing on wisdom makes those listening and those speaking wiser right? right so on we go yes!

  • Make sure you inform your betas of any specifics input your looking for. It helps make the process much more stream. There is a time and place for a shotgun or a rifle.
  • If you are a beta try to read it two maybe more and each time look for one or two type of things to critique, as I said before shotgun versus the rifle
  • when looking Beta’s get those who are dependable, but also get a diverse crew not just authors look for artists, teachers, scientists, soldiers, cooks whatever because the more perspectives you get the better your writing will be trust me reaching a wide audience is key and running the gauntlet of betas is the way to success in this endevour.

(I bet there’s gonna be a lot of gun metaphors in this thing, what do you think? Eh? Eh?)

  • Give your betas your work in a form easy for them to manage ie Eformat, or a word doc they can convert, or a PDF just whatever makes it easiest for them. They’re doing you a service remember lol.
  • Beta’s don’t be afraid to ask for something to help you along the way. also communicate with the author, if something confuses you in the reading take a quote and shoot and email asking for clarification.
  • Don’t nit pick the small stuff. spelling can be easily fixed but a shitty character, drop plot line, or a plot hole the size of Jupiter not so much.
  • author’s don’t get offended we know this is your baby and we will be as gentle bu honest as possible, and beta’s don’t be fucking cruel man. Karma is a bitch let me tell you.

Well these are just some general things to think about when beta’ing or looking for beta’s.  If you have any ideas to add or think I spouting out absolute nonsense then let me know and comment away but until next this Big Bear *slips back in the den*

Big Bear Unchained

broken-chain-1024x768So this post is probably gonna offend some people but hey it’s the Internet right?Right.

I am a person who makes jokes, I make jokes a lot. I say things that can make a lot of people uncomfortable. One of the most confusing and troubling things people find about me is I find the word Nigger funny. I should state that as a young idiot black youth I was called nigger and it made me so mad that I fought someone over it, and for that, for fighting over it I am sorry. A lot of people probably feel that is well acceptable to fight over but this grown up and far more mature version of Me. I feel that the word nigger has way to much power among we the enlightened people. This is 2012 and folks absolutely cringe as if being hit when this word is spoken. I mean young black Americans like myself, still today if called a nigger or even hear the word spoken by someone not black will flip shit as if that person just brandished a whip and white hood. I don’t get it.

Black people today use nigger as a term of greeting or endearment, “what up nigga?”, “You my nigga” like putting an “A” on the end make its for only ok for black people to say and if you anyone else it has to have “ER” at the end and be totally offensive and racist…yeah that makes sense. Comedians like Dave Chapelle, and Paul Mooney, just to name some of most notable. Have made a fortune off the word nigger. Albeit along with far more foul language in my opinion. Yet the fact remains that Dave’s Nigger Family skit was freaking funny, the Black White Supremacist floored a nation and any time Paul steps to a microphone for a stand up set you can expect to break your funny bone and nigger will be apart of the reason. That is the keys to this puzzle folks right there, laughter.

I saw Django Unchained last night and the word nigger was used in high amount…insanely high amounts or a mainstream movie hell I don’t think roots can hold a candle. Folks in the theater around me got bone stock still, you could have heard a pin drop. Yet nigger was used in funny scenes, tragic scenes, normal scenes, character building scenes I mean I don’t think there was a scene with dialogue without the word nigger or negro. That’s another step or key if you will. How else do you break the spell over one of histories most notorious words, you make people laugh at it, or feel a strong emotion while hearing it but don’t play it up. Let it happen and move on. Fears are crushed by laughter and understanding. Nigger is a word that symbolizes and is made from fear. The more it is used the less risqué and more normalized it can become. It’s just a damn word. Which is why again I am sorry for ever raising a hand in violence at that funny little word.

Here is some Big Bear homework for you choose just one or all of these 1) Go see Django Unchained, 2) watch the Chapelle show’s Nigger family and Black White Supremacist skits, 3) the South Park episode with Stan’s dad on wheel of fortune 4) watch all Paul Mooney’s stand up on Netflix. Then come back here and comment on this post. If you agree thank you for being open minded and casting the ridiculous spell at the nigger word. If you disagree  why? why in 2013 are you so afraid or offended by the word nigger? I am not saying we should use the world in everyday language but if someone calls me a nigger and in modern times it has been done, I am and have laughed right in there face. It tickles me pink when it happens because I could give two shits about that word and any connotation it has. IT’S. JUST. A. WORD.

I don’t know if your reading this and are like yeah he’s right or this nigger here is insane but either way I am gonna laugh about it I will thank you, because I am not afraid of a word. Until we can stop being afraid of the word nigger we can never move past the things symbolized with in it. So if I have offended you well…tough, I am a nigger bear after all.

Bear’s Love Music…Honest!

GodsmackMusic, the melodic expression of art. It’s a way to relieve stress by listening or making it. It’s one of the most diverse forms of art out there, and can set or kill the mood if the wrong music is played. Music is a grand endeavor and as a band geek of old I have a very big place in my heart for music. I bring this up because a band I listened to for some time  in my younger days I cam back to this morning. That band is…Godsmack. Godsmack you say, what about them has you waxing poetic down memory lane. well I will tell you.

Godsmack has put a number of albums in the past and recent put out a best of entitled “Good Times, Bad Times – Ten Years of Godsmack” and I would definitely suggest for those not familiar with these guys to pick it up and if you like grab there full catalog because it was epic stuff. I went through alot of bands to talk about in this post but I chose Godsmack for one reason these other bands don’t have Sully Erna. This leading man has one of the, if not the most recognizable voice in all of music. Whats more if you ever had the pleasure to see them live he is not a massive man is a rather average and unassuming fellow. Well until he begins to belt out “Bad Religion” or create a dark and devilishly ethereal vibe with “voodoo”. I am not taking anything away from the rest of the band because with out them this voice would never have reached mine or your ears.

So yeah, Bears do love music this one especially. So when your down and out, tired and need a pick me up, or just feel like dancing like a fool. Put on some tunes and go with the flow, I promise what ever the reason Music is the perfect accompaniment.

2013: Resolutions and Recaps

IMG_8525Wow, how does time fly? You feel like you have a grasp on things. You feel like you can keep a head of the curve and cruise on through, then bang, Life happens. It’s something we all have felt and experienced through out years on this ball of noble gases, elements, and critters. 2012 was no exception to this. I continued this very blog, started a podcast, and kept up the writing. I attended 3 conventions and met so many new people, got diagnosed with diabetes. Just in the nick of time for the divines only know what could have happened it I had of kept going the way I was. A perspective on life I couldn’t get any more focused and life teaches this ol’bear one more thing.

Now we are in 2013 and a time of rejuvenation has begun, rebirth, new things are begun, old habits will die hard. An all in all we will struggle until the next stage in out lives begin, that is life. An expanding tome started at our first screaming glimpse into the light of our first day til the fading light of our last. Grimm huh? not really because all that life in the middle is what you want the meat of your story, all those characters, all those action scenes and twist and subplots. This is why I made the 3 resolutions I made this year as the year of the snake was born writhing along the stoke of midnight.

  • I will get in shape, build my body back up to what it was, and be healthier.

This was not only for my sake but for my Nephews and nieces sake. he told me something at my mothers funeral that shook me and I will never forget his words, I may put them from the forefront of my mind but they are never gone. A midst all tears shed by friends and family, and oppressing grief. My 11 year old nephews says to me and my aunts as he looked at those expressing their sorrow and says’,

“If Uncle Jason wasn’t here, or if he was out of control and crying. I don’t think I could handle this.”

This was probably the one thing said to me that hole day as I laid my mother to rest, that really felt like something. Nothing against those who came to me in my time of need, but this child, gave me something I thought I would never know or understand. What being a father, or in this case a father figure is all about, and I owe him and his sisters and brothers to be strong, healthy and the gnarliest uncle this side Gary Busey in Silver Bullet.

  • To be better with money. Saving, spending, just the whole bit.
  • To go back to school and finish what I started almost a decade ago.

Money, everyone says but hey who doesn’t want more money? As we all money it takes money to make money, and the last. Well its school and knowledge is power to date myself with a Schoolhouse rock quote. Also I have fucking losing and not making through college in my youth as I should have hurt me, and hurt those who believed in me. I am a little late on the resolve and maturity thing but its never to late to learn from your mistakes. that is what a New Year is all about growth, rebirth, and new beginnings. So let’s all do this thing right shall we and so 2013 it’s just another chapter in a very, very long harrowing story.
