Honestly this one is all about surrounding yourself. By what you may ask and I say for what reason you wanna surround yourself should the main thing you think of first. Success is exactly what you want to surround yourself for. Setting yourself up to succeed can come in many forms and one of the forms we men forget is true friends. No friends you have known forever, or grew up with, though they can be true friends. I am talking about those that will forcibly pic you up and slap you around a bit so your take the one step at a time to get back on your feet. I am talking about the true friends who caring, compassion, and love come not only with out strings but with out being asked for, with out reservations. With all the things that have gone on with me as of late I have seen who are truly my friends, ad who I know I could/would go to war with and for. So fellas if you think you got it together and you can’t seem to figure out why the ladies are avoiding you, or why people tend avoid you, take stock of whom you surround yourself with. You are seen by the company you keep, its not fair but if you took better personal inventory you would understand why people make such associations. Just something to think about from the Bear.
So I have been basically testing the boundaries of my ability to podcast this mouth and it has been a hoot because after trying the podcast a week schedule when i first started Talk Nerdy 2 Me, I failed not all entirely my fault but i shoulder the responsibility for the cast. Now I have for the month of October undertaken 31 Podcasts in 31 Days. Its a horror movie a day and it has been rather taxing because I have continued to put out regular episodes on top of these(those some pull double duty like the Carrie episode) I also have gotten some guests on bored and have at least 2-3 more before the months is out to have on the show. This all means that we can actually finish this task and maybe come out of it with more movies than we actually intended plus network and build some relationships with other casters. It has been a blast and the regular episode format will be changing some. I am trying to get it more professional so the segment intros will return also other podcast promos in the middle or end of podcast with return. Sponsorships if any do come in for the podast in the future will come at the front of the podcast also bumpers will be used for middle of cast breaks. Bonus/Minisodes will be rather informal but will keep being numbers as they are currently with defining abbreviations depending on there purpose (ie HH for Halloween Horrorfest). last interviews I am hoping to not just keep interviews to the time after AFO each year as I would like to get Authors, Actors, Voice Actors, other Podcasters and folks into the mix as well to add to there grand total. Phew this is going to be a fun second half of the year for Talk Nerdy 2 Me I have many more lofty goals but each one comes with time and effort that i must expend and time is something we never seem to have enough of.
With all that said the idea of sponsors feels rather crazy to me because I am so not comfortable with PR, Adverts, and that sort of business dealings. I am behind the mic remember. So am so crazy nervous about attempting. Also Momma has been prodding at the idea of getting a small business license for the podcast so new equipment and travel can be written off so it’s not such an expense though that opens a whole world of things and possiblities but its hard to fathom attempting such things. Well who knows right? What the future may hold but it frightens me and excites me lol. Well I am out of here and I hope you guys enjoy coming to sit down and talk with me and I will continue both updating and chatting and podcasting. It’s what i want to do, and passion of mine that i love so no matter how down and out i get or seem coming to this blog and spouting off about to you all and putting out a new podcast makes it better. knowing that the few of you who read this or listen to the cast enjoy it keeps me going. I thank you so much for all the support and for all the attentions and help you have given. Thank You and the bear is off to probably watch another film lol.(Hey TundraBaby Wake up!!)
With the release of the fantastic film Pacific Rim(Which everyone should see) I am reminded of just how much anime(Japanese Cartoons) have influenced Hollywood and Tv. This is news to alot of people and alot of them call shenanigans on my claim, this is fine because everyone has there freedom to feel that way but I am here today in the Den to posture alittle bit so “Bear” with me.
I am a huge nerd we all know this and take it as fact lol(most do anyway) and this means I watch things from Doctor Who to Warehouse 13 back to X-Files and Star Trek: Next Generation ending with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoons. So shows like FireFly are loved by me and so many others yet when I brought up the fact that the scene in the beginning of the series when Dr. Simon Tam’s sister River is awakened coiled up in a briefcase the first thing out of my mouth was holy shit its Outlaw Star.
I am not saying this is a bad thing at all but but on the contrary is a great homage to Whedon’s love of anime. Yet alot of fans of the show call it a qawinky dink. Well huh.
Another movies that had my anime senses tingling was The Chronicle. I n my opinion its the closest we will probably ever get to an Akira movie. What is Akira you ask? Well it’s a SciFi action film from the 1988 directed by Katsuhiro Otomo, written by Otomo and Izo Hashimoto and is thought to be one of the most beautiful and influential feature length Anime to this day. It’s about a kid who gets psychic powers and as we power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. The kid turns totally bag and ends up going against his friends, the government and himself. the story parts are very similar but the two key things that connected The Chronicle and Akira in my mind was the speech in chronicle about natural selection and apex predators and the visuals during the hospital break out and fight were the man character in chronicle has his head bandaged, along with his arm and leg and looks almost identical to Tetsuo in Akira during his hospital scenes. also the fight during the climax shown in the trailer has alot of similarities between the Tetsuo v Military fight in Akira.
I have simply talked about a tv show that has gained massive love from a its massive fanbase and a major motion picture that hit thousands of screens world wide. So to finish up and back track both at the same time I want to come back to Pacific Rim, or as alot of my friends call it G Gundam meets Godzilla. Gundam and Godzilla are probably the two most recognizable franchises to come out of Japan. The Godzilla connection in Pacific Rim is right in front of you as soon as you see the trailer giant monsters known as Kaiju. When you watch the film these creature designs are all based on Earth based critters, like the gorilla-esk monster fought by the main characters in there robot Gypsy Danger, or the crab like kaiju in a key flashback scene. Now the thing that brought the butts to the seats was giant robots and these things are awesome, and there connection to anime in this humble Bear’s opinion is more based in the work of Go Nagai. the Key and point being the Rocket Punch shown in the trailers along with the chest missiles used in the film and the chest blast which is very similar to Getter Robo’s Getter Beam. Where as the crews of each robot are definitely of the G Gundam-esk stereotypes ie cocky Americans, tough stern no fun Russians(with crazy 80’s hair), the lightening fast kunfu using Chinese team, and the cowboy like Australians.
The moral of this post in the nutshell is basically to say there is nothing wrong with liking anime or giving it its proper due, Hollywood does, even though they may not scream it from the mountain tops. The influences are all throughout our favorite tv shows, games, movies you name it. So when some nerdy lil otaku like me says hey man there is this Japanese cartoon with stuff just like that or identical too, why not check it out you could be pleasantly surprised.
Well this Bear is signing out sorry for the super long post, but some times a guy just has to go hey look! SEE! I told you man! and let that be that lol. Anyway hope I didn’t bore you with my gibber jabber and just maybe you came away with a new outlook on anime and how it can show up when you lease expect it. so until next time.
Ya know, So many things can knock you down or smash up your day. Yet so many simple things can turn it all around. For me sitting on my front porch smoking a nice cigar can calm a shit-tastic day and turn it around. Though today I have found another pleasure and it was rather glorious. That was reading a good comic book. That comic was Irredeemable, basically the story of what would happen is superman was bat shit crazy and liked it. I haven’t read a story as satisfying as this since I read Stephen King’s Bag of Bones, and haven’t felt so good finishing a story from beginning to end since his dark tower series.
I think alot of us forget to just enjoy the things that got us along before all the working, and bill paying, etc. So I highly recommend Irredeemable it was a great story I will be trying to podcast about that and Man of steel with James(Face) at some point. I have also picked up a new books. This one is by PJ Schnyder called Bite Me its books one in her London undead series. Tonight as of this post at 7pm est there will be a twitter chat with prizes lol. just looks up #BiteMe and join in on the fun.
Well I am going to keep this short and sweet I have scotch to drink, OWG posts to crit, and more reading to do plus podcasts. Yet I wont forget to take a bit of time for me to enjoy and relax, and neither should you. Until next time talk to you later.
Well You read right this bear Is on the move through a beta read for a friend*cough* here’s looking at you Cat!!*cough*. I decided to do this post because well, I think beta reading is fun and being apart of the growth and creation of some ones world is just amazing. Also it will teach you think about critique another’s work and also guide you along the path of writing so yours gets better as well so it win, win all around. so here are a few things I have picked up along the way to help those seeking betas and those willing to or are betas themselves. also most of this is things form far bigger and better folks but passing on wisdom makes those listening and those speaking wiser right? right so on we go yes!
- Make sure you inform your betas of any specifics input your looking for. It helps make the process much more stream. There is a time and place for a shotgun or a rifle.
- If you are a beta try to read it two maybe more and each time look for one or two type of things to critique, as I said before shotgun versus the rifle
- when looking Beta’s get those who are dependable, but also get a diverse crew not just authors look for artists, teachers, scientists, soldiers, cooks whatever because the more perspectives you get the better your writing will be trust me reaching a wide audience is key and running the gauntlet of betas is the way to success in this endevour.
(I bet there’s gonna be a lot of gun metaphors in this thing, what do you think? Eh? Eh?)
- Give your betas your work in a form easy for them to manage ie Eformat, or a word doc they can convert, or a PDF just whatever makes it easiest for them. They’re doing you a service remember lol.
- Beta’s don’t be afraid to ask for something to help you along the way. also communicate with the author, if something confuses you in the reading take a quote and shoot and email asking for clarification.
- Don’t nit pick the small stuff. spelling can be easily fixed but a shitty character, drop plot line, or a plot hole the size of Jupiter not so much.
- author’s don’t get offended we know this is your baby and we will be as gentle bu honest as possible, and beta’s don’t be fucking cruel man. Karma is a bitch let me tell you.
Well these are just some general things to think about when beta’ing or looking for beta’s. If you have any ideas to add or think I spouting out absolute nonsense then let me know and comment away but until next this Big Bear *slips back in the den*
I am a person who makes jokes, I make jokes a lot. I say things that can make a lot of people uncomfortable. One of the most confusing and troubling things people find about me is I find the word Nigger funny. I should state that as a young idiot black youth I was called nigger and it made me so mad that I fought someone over it, and for that, for fighting over it I am sorry. A lot of people probably feel that is well acceptable to fight over but this grown up and far more mature version of Me. I feel that the word nigger has way to much power among we the enlightened people. This is 2012 and folks absolutely cringe as if being hit when this word is spoken. I mean young black Americans like myself, still today if called a nigger or even hear the word spoken by someone not black will flip shit as if that person just brandished a whip and white hood. I don’t get it.
Black people today use nigger as a term of greeting or endearment, “what up nigga?”, “You my nigga” like putting an “A” on the end make its for only ok for black people to say and if you anyone else it has to have “ER” at the end and be totally offensive and racist…yeah that makes sense. Comedians like Dave Chapelle, and Paul Mooney, just to name some of most notable. Have made a fortune off the word nigger. Albeit along with far more foul language in my opinion. Yet the fact remains that Dave’s Nigger Family skit was freaking funny, the Black White Supremacist floored a nation and any time Paul steps to a microphone for a stand up set you can expect to break your funny bone and nigger will be apart of the reason. That is the keys to this puzzle folks right there, laughter.
I saw Django Unchained last night and the word nigger was used in high amount…insanely high amounts or a mainstream movie hell I don’t think roots can hold a candle. Folks in the theater around me got bone stock still, you could have heard a pin drop. Yet nigger was used in funny scenes, tragic scenes, normal scenes, character building scenes I mean I don’t think there was a scene with dialogue without the word nigger or negro. That’s another step or key if you will. How else do you break the spell over one of histories most notorious words, you make people laugh at it, or feel a strong emotion while hearing it but don’t play it up. Let it happen and move on. Fears are crushed by laughter and understanding. Nigger is a word that symbolizes and is made from fear. The more it is used the less risqué and more normalized it can become. It’s just a damn word. Which is why again I am sorry for ever raising a hand in violence at that funny little word.
Here is some Big Bear homework for you choose just one or all of these 1) Go see Django Unchained, 2) watch the Chapelle show’s Nigger family and Black White Supremacist skits, 3) the South Park episode with Stan’s dad on wheel of fortune 4) watch all Paul Mooney’s stand up on Netflix. Then come back here and comment on this post. If you agree thank you for being open minded and casting the ridiculous spell at the nigger word. If you disagree why? why in 2013 are you so afraid or offended by the word nigger? I am not saying we should use the world in everyday language but if someone calls me a nigger and in modern times it has been done, I am and have laughed right in there face. It tickles me pink when it happens because I could give two shits about that word and any connotation it has. IT’S. JUST. A. WORD.
I don’t know if your reading this and are like yeah he’s right or this nigger here is insane but either way I am gonna laugh about it I will thank you, because I am not afraid of a word. Until we can stop being afraid of the word nigger we can never move past the things symbolized with in it. So if I have offended you well…tough, I am a nigger bear after all.
Music, the melodic expression of art. It’s a way to relieve stress by listening or making it. It’s one of the most diverse forms of art out there, and can set or kill the mood if the wrong music is played. Music is a grand endeavor and as a band geek of old I have a very big place in my heart for music. I bring this up because a band I listened to for some time in my younger days I cam back to this morning. That band is…Godsmack. Godsmack you say, what about them has you waxing poetic down memory lane. well I will tell you.
Godsmack has put a number of albums in the past and recent put out a best of entitled “Good Times, Bad Times – Ten Years of Godsmack” and I would definitely suggest for those not familiar with these guys to pick it up and if you like grab there full catalog because it was epic stuff. I went through alot of bands to talk about in this post but I chose Godsmack for one reason these other bands don’t have Sully Erna. This leading man has one of the, if not the most recognizable voice in all of music. Whats more if you ever had the pleasure to see them live he is not a massive man is a rather average and unassuming fellow. Well until he begins to belt out “Bad Religion” or create a dark and devilishly ethereal vibe with “voodoo”. I am not taking anything away from the rest of the band because with out them this voice would never have reached mine or your ears.
So yeah, Bears do love music this one especially. So when your down and out, tired and need a pick me up, or just feel like dancing like a fool. Put on some tunes and go with the flow, I promise what ever the reason Music is the perfect accompaniment.
Alright if you have been fallowing my Facebook exploits or noticing my random tweets then I am slowly beginning to bite the bullet and trying to get a podcast together. I think I have my co-host my friend Amber whom I have known since I was like 5 or 6. I think she will make a good partner in this endeavors because we argue like crazy lol. well I mean we agree on some things but we are different enough in what we geek out about that it could make for some interesting things to podcast about. Now the hang ups I am coming into are 1) A name and 2) subject matter, because as the Podcasting for dummies podcast and book say you should have 5 or so shows in the can just in case something happens and if your just starting out like me then its a great way to start off right(Tee Morris and Pip would be proud).
To mitigate the first problem of a name I have made a Poll on facebook HERE and would love for you all to go and vote because I am lazy and the poll does the counting of votes for me lol. Now subject matter I was thinking of all the nerdy things ya know anime, movies, comics, video games etc for review topics. Also some Author interviews weather they be Pro or self pub. Now myself I think of myself as some what of a writer and so does amber so potentially we could put out short stories or some of our fiction in the feed. I don’t know how people would like that but its just a possiblity, what do you guys think.
Now on to what everyone has been waiting on Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter….oh and by the way….
***SUPER DUPER MEGA ULTRA BEAR SPOILERS***
Alot people think this movie and book are just absurd, and they are SO wrong. This movie is like a silver ax pistol with a bayonet attachment to the face(which happens). I am going to talk about the vampire first and for most, they are what you would think vampires should be cold, calculating and snazzy dressers. Rufus Sewell pulls this off in spades let me tell you and his in movie Vampire sister enforcer played by Erin Wasson puts the sex in sexually charged sex appeal…oh god would I do horrible… well never mind that. In one of the great scenes of the movie she pins down Abraham(Benjamin Walker) with a chair and high heels…oh yeah
The action, and choreography of said action I loved it was washingtonian ax-fu, and did I mention the ax had a pistol built in? The one down fall for the combat in the film was it was alot of working in CG and I much prefer live stuntmen kicking the crap out of one another. All is forgiven when you fight a vampire in the middle of a giant stampede of horses thst involved a vampire going all British Bulldog on two horses by bulldog take downing them to trip up Lincoln’s horse. then chase one another across horse back by leap frogging them. sounds nuts? well that just the beginning because a horse is used as weapon. how do you ask the vampire throws it at Lincoln and hits him with it. all the while in the middle of a stampede.
Now to talk about some little tidbits that really were great touches. Lincoln was a giant of a man and they do a good job of portraying that with his awkward movements. Also a scene where he is riding a horse it looks as if his feet are going to drag on the ground. Another lovely touch is when they show you how the vampires can go out into the sun with a sign advertising what I call Steampunk Vampire sun screen which is mad from human blood among other things.
The vampires also have powers, invisibility, super speed, and super strength are what are shown in the movie. but the best to me is when they blend into ceiling paintings to ambush Lincoln and his free slave best friend and shop owner bud. I don’t know if this is a power or use of vamp hypnosis but it was Sweet.
To close out if an ax/pistol with a bayonet attachment, sexy vampire lady enforcers, vampire sun screen and living horse weapons arent enough to sell this move then the boobs, and bathtub sex should. This movie has Big Bears Approval from start to finish a definite MUST GO SEE. so until next time and don’t forget to vote for my podcast name thanks a head of time.
As I have been a fan of podcasts, podcasters, and books. I have heard so many people talking about Balticon being the podcaster con, and never got around to going until this year. Man boy have I been missing out. This was the most amazing time I have ever had, I met so many people that are from podcasts that I listen to. I was in constant fanboy and it was great.
My room was nice though I think I like the hotel at Anime Festival Orlando better
If you guys watched my twitter or my Facebook I came up on Thursday giving myself a bit of recovery then the next day I began the con off right with a panel about steam punk with Tee Morris, Philippa Ballantine Morris, and Doc Coleman. This was my first time meeting the good doctor even though that morning I was eating breakfast and he was just outside in the lobby waiting for Nathan Lowell. The whole time we had been tweeting back and forth. Then later on I met up with Tee and Pip and the Manly Man Morris began his preparations for the New New Media party which was everyone showing up with meat and good beer at the Marriott Residence Hotel and Tee grilling it up. This was so much fun, we plan on doing it again hopefully it will get bigger.
I began the day with another awesome breakfast
Then I started out with a panel about editing your podcast with Michael L. Stokes, John Mierau, Paul Elard Cooley, Tim Dodge and John Anealio. I recorded this whole panel I am not a good filmer but its not to bad some shaky bits but nothing to bad. Though I am using the free wordpress and I haven’t got the video upgrade so I will figure out something either youtube or facebook or something.
I also went to the Geek Radio Live Panel and it was a blast to behold SHO-NUFF!
Next up was Tee and Pip’s signing then following them was Nobilis Reeds signing. Things were going good until I made the fatal flaw of goingto the room to take a nap as I was still very fatigued from the new new media party and I aggrivatingly slept through the I Should Be Writing Live panel by Mur Lafferty…maybe next year. I did how ever go to Scott Sigler‘s panel on Expanding his Galactic Football League series.
I rounded out the evening with a little Erotica Ala Cart: Iron Chef. There are pictures but these are..well they involve a plus penis, and the miss use of Rumbas so I don’t know if they could be placed on the blog just yet gotta ask some people for permission lol. Let me tell you if you can make it to Balticon next year this panel is a MUST.
Finally I went to the Greoge Hrab Concert it was awesome. The one down side is that I had only my iphone I captured video but it is not good quality and it would not do the awesome that George Hrab puts down at his shows justice. Then I finish the night up with more hanging wih folks and hittin the bar. A real girl herself bought me a drink and Scott and I talked up the playoff and the coming football season needless to say it aint a party unless your double fisting some sort of alcoholic beverage which is the reason I didn’t end up back in my room til 3am or so lol.
I started with some Mickey D’s I McGriddles lol. Then I hit my first panel which was on building a religion in your Fiction with John C.Wright, Barbara Friend Ish, Gail Z. Martin, Bernard Dukas, and the awesome P.G. Holyfield. Then I went to Anime for parents and the Scifi in anime panels. The notable things about this is after wards I walked with the members of the panel who are on the Balticon Anime track and they want me to do Anime panels next year so look out Balticon 47 Big Bear will be in you.
After a nap(these podcasters can drink) I grab some lunch and head to the live Shared Desk. I recorded all of this as well(I need a youtube account) but the most exciting then other than a visit from Crazy Uncle Charlie was the world premier of the book trailer for the second Ministry of Peculiar Occurrences novel The Janus Affair.
Riding this awesome wave I went to the Devo Spice concert and it was Fucking Hilarious and awesome and I will totally have to make a youtube account so I can post it up for you guys I recorded the whole thing every song from begining to end. Then I was off for the last night of partying
Monday’s big goodbye.
Was fun but sad for it was the last day of the con I attended Nathan Lowell’s reading and Doc Coleman’s reading
Well That was my balitcon in a nutshell I have a blast and cannot recommend this convention enough to anyone who loves podcasters, or SciFi, or both. Part to will be just all the random pics I took from panels, around the con and the Monday goodbye/send off lunch. Well this is Big Bear signing off for now.
Spending time with the family and friends dear to us this holiday season you are invariably to come across little ones and the little ones you come across with always have something oh so important to tell you. From how they don’t like aunt so and so’s casserole or they don’t like the home made socks gram-gram makes. All the things that can come out of the mouths of our children are miraculous and unfathomably hilarious driving home the fact they are apart of us. That they are the passing on of ideas, concepts, mannerisms, biology, and all those things we did as kids to our parents just revisited with the twist of a new generation.
My niece and nephew pictured here are prime examples of this in action, I was having a talk with my nephew Devon(not pictured) and i asked him about a girl he was interested in and faster than he could reply my niece rattled off the girl in questions full name, where she lived, how recently she has been over, and that Devon has kissed her(on the cheek). I was well…stuck by the info dump not at what it was but how freely and easily she spoke of it, and the beet red face of my nephew spoke volumes as well. It took all I had to not laugh and hold it together to explain that this is something for me and Devon to discuss, also had to explain they were brother and sister(which she answered “I know uncle Jason”) and that she isn’t supposed to snitch or tattle tale on her own brother because family has to help each other. The rest of the conversation with my nephew was continued outside just for the preservation of my nephews pride.
So keep that in mind this holiday season, be prepared for the the things from the mouths of babes it can be a bit…shocking, alarming, and down right hilarious.
